As temperatures plummet, you may have noticed changes with your skin. But don’t despair, Wendy Stirling, Founder of Botanicals Natural Organic Skincare, explains how to winter-proof your skin…
What does the cold do to your skin?
‘Winter air robs the skin of its natural moisture leading to dryness, flaking, chaffing and redness,’ explains Wendy, ‘those with sensitive or very dry skin, those prone to eczema, rosacea, or other skin related concerns will suffer the most.’
What’s your best defence?
‘A good organic, natural cream that provides a barrier to the elements, but also one that allows the skin to breathe and crucially doesn’t block the pores,’ she says. ‘Take a short shower using a natural moisturising body wash or soap and apply a good organic body balm or lotion afterwards and twice a day thereafter and stay wrapped up with clothes made of natural fibre.’ She also recommends looking out for organic shea butter in your ingredients, ‘it’s one of nature’s miracles for protecting our skin.’
Should you change your skin care routine?
‘In winter, air has a low moisture content causing exposed skin to dry out quicker, so choose natural cream-based cleansing products that don’t strip the skin of its natural oils and emollient moisturisers that soothe the skin and help lock-in moisture,’ she explains, ‘using a vitamin-rich facial serum twice a day also helps provide winter skin with an intensive boost of nourishment.’ Above all, avoid skin care products that contain synthetic ingredients and petrochemicals, as these can have a drying effect on the skin.
